Outpatient Surgery Magazine
A study being presented at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ annual conference in Denver, Colo., this weekend finds that liposuction patients experience a reduction in triglyceride levels and white blood cell counts, which could potentially decrease patients’ risks for heart disease, stroke and diabetes.
The study measured triglyceride and cholesterol levels in 322 patients undergoing liposuction and/or a tummy tuck. Of those patients, 71% underwent liposuction only. Triglyceride levels in patients with normal pre-operative levels were unchanged. However, patients with elevated, at-risk levels (>150 mg/dl) experienced, on average, a 43% reduction in triglyceride levels after surgery, or about twice the effect achieved with a drug commonly prescribed to reduce triglyceride levels. The effect was similar in both men and women.

What are the qualifications of a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon
Saturday, May 14th, 2011The following information can be found on the ASPS Website:
ASPS Member Qualifications
Many health care providers are now performing plastic surgery procedures, but that doesn’t mean they’re all qualified to perform plastic surgery. ASPS Member Surgeons are trained in cosmetic and reconstructive procedures of all types.
Members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. The ABPS is approved by the American Board of Medical Specialties to certify physicians in plastic surgery of the face and all areas of the body.
When you choose an ASPS Member Surgeon you know your surgeon:
- Has at least 6 years of training and experience in surgery, with 3 years specifically in plastic surgery
- Is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery
- Operates only in accredited medical facilities
- Adheres to a strict code of ethics
- Fulfills continuing education requirements, including patient safety techniques
- Will be your partner, working to achieve your goals
To make sure your surgeon has these outstanding qualifications, look for the ASPS Member Surgeon symbol.
New Survey Shows Mom’s Unconventional Mother’s Day Wish List
Wednesday, May 11th, 2011The following excerpt on Mommy Makeover is part of an article published on the ASPS webiste:
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., May 2, 2011 - What would mom get herself for Mother’s Day if she had the chance? A new survey shows that it might be a tummy tuck or breast lift.
A survey released today from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) shows that if cost were not an issue, 62 percent of mothers said that they would consider a “mommy makeover” that includes procedures such as a tummy tuck, breast augmentation and/or breast lift.*
According to ASPS statistics, the number of women getting “mommy makeover” procedures is on the rise. Women had nearly 112,000 tummy tucks in 2010, up 85 percent since 2000; 90,000 breast lifts, up 70 percent since 2000; and 296,000 breast augmentations, up 39 percent since 2000.
“In the last decade we’ve seen women’s attitudes about cosmetic surgery change. Today women are not afraid to admit that they love their children, but they wish their bodies looked the way they did before their first pregnancies. And they’re not afraid to acknowledge that they may need a little help beyond a healthy diet and exercise,” said ASPS President Phillip Haeck, MD.
Another trend that ASPS Member Surgeons are noticing is that the type of patient seeking “mommy makeover” plastic surgery is younger than a decade ago.
“In the past we saw a lot of women in their 50s getting these types of procedures. But today we are seeing young mothers in their 30s coming in for procedures such as tummy tucks and breast lifts. They don’t want to wait years to reestablish how they used to look. They want their pre-baby bodies back now,” said Dr. Haeck.
